Christian Schulz put in a battling performance in last weekend's 1-0 victory over VfB Stuttgart. 'Schulle' fought to the death and held the defence together with aplomb - he even had to leave the field three times for treatment. Now it has been discovered that he has sustained two broken bones from the match.

Three injuries in one game

The central defender first injured the middle finger on his left hand when he bent it back following a fall. The finger was then trodden on by an opposing player and 'Schulle' had to be treated by club doctor Wego Kregehr. Following that, the 26-year-old defender caught a stray Ciprian Marica elbow in the face.

Cast for four weeks

The diagnosis: Schulz finished the match with two broken bones - to his finger and his nose. It is still unclear exactly when 'Schulle' will return to training or indeed whether he can play against 1. FC Köln on Saturday. If he does play, it could well be that Schulz has to wear a mask. "I'm not a big fan of masks, they hinder my performance," said Schulz. "We'll have to work out what the risk involved is, but I've tried it before. Things are improving for the 3-time German international with his nose becoming less and less of a problem. The stumbling block could be the finger, for which he must wear a cast for the next four weeks. Schulz completed a light training session on Tuesday morning along with Jan Schlaudraff. A few short exercises with the ball later, however, and it was back to the changing rooms.

We wish 'Schulle' all the best in his recovery and hope that he will be back to his energetic self for the game against 1. FC Köln on Saturday.
